How to apply for the Student Maintenance Grant

Please note that for 2012/2013 college year, Co Limerick VEC will not be assessing new applications for Third Level Grants as this contract has now been awarded to City of Dublin VEC.  Further information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

You should apply to Co. Limerick VEC if you have applied for or will be attending an approved course in one of the following institutions in the 2011/12 academic year:

  • an approved Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) centre;
  • an Institute of Technology.

You should apply to the local authority in your area if you have applied for or will be attending an approved course in one of the following institutions in the 2011/12 academic year:

  • a university;
  • a prescribed educational institution in Ireland (for example a college of education);
  • an approved undergraduate course in an approved educational institution in the EU;
  • an approved postgraduate course in an approved educational institution in Northern Ireland.

Note: If you were previously in receipt of a student grant you should re-apply to the grant awarding authority who previously processed your student grant application.

2. Download and print the grant application form at www.studentfinance.ie, then complete and return to the relevant authority.

The application form, if downloaded, must be completed in full, signed and returned to us along with the relevant supporting documentation.  It is advisable that fully completed forms are submitted together with required documentation as early as possible to enable this office to process applications in a timely manner.

Students can apply for a grant without necessarily having accepted their college place.

Late applications will not be dealt with until all others are finalised.

All applicants should note the following:-

Candidates must complete the Student Grant Application Form and supply the required documentation.

Candidates should refer to the Guidance Notes when completing the Application Form.

Only original documents will be accepted.  All documents will be copied and returned as a matter of routine as soon as processing begins on each application.

Students in Receipt of Back to Education Allowance /VTOS Payments

Students in receipt of BTEA/VTOS payments are no longer eligible for student maintenance grants.  However students attending IT's and Universities can apply for a Fees Only grant.  Please contact us for further information.

Budgetary Changes 2011
Important Notice:

Please note the following changes to the distance for the non-adjacent rate for 2011/12:
The qualifying distance criterion for entitlement to the higher non-adjacent rate of grant (distance from home to the college) will be changed from 15 miles (24km) to 28 miles (45km).  This measure will take effect for all students both new and renewal from the start of the 2011/12 academic year.
The automatic eligibility of mature students to the higher non-adjacent rate of payment, will no longer apply, effective for all students both new and renewal from the commencement of the 2011/12 academic year.
€200 annual contribution charge for PLC courses: 

Any learner who enrols on an approved PLC course is eligible to pay the €200 PLC programme participant contribution.
The contribution is an annual contribution.  Eligible participants on PLC courses of more than one year's duration must pay the contribution for each year of that course.
 
The following categories of participant are exempt from paying the contribution:-
Full medical card holders in their own right and their dependent children.
Those who are eligible under the student grant scheme.
Those in receipt of the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) or VTOS payments.
