Exciting New Educational Development for Abbeyfeale

Recent weeks has seen significant progress in the context of Post Primary Development in Abbeyfeale, with the Tanaiste and Minister for Education and Skills signing the contract and the advent of Sisk and Company Contractors moving on site to commence the construction of the new Community College for the locality.

The new College, incorporating the amalgamation of the three existing schools, St. Ita’s, St. Joseph’s and the Vocational School, will be located in a new state of the art campus and is scheduled for occupation in August, 2011. With a capacity for 850 students, the College will enjoy the most ultra modern facilities with accommodation including; 25 General Classrooms, 2 Lecture Rooms, Music/Drama Area, Mathematics Room, 2 Social Studies Rooms, Multimedia Lab, 4 Science Labs and Demonstration Theatre, two Art Rooms, two Home Economics Rooms, 2 Materials Technology (Wood) Rooms, 2 Engineering Rooms, 2 IT Labs, 1 Technology Lab, 1 Technical Graphics/CAD Room, Guidance Suite, Oratory and Meditation Area, Chaplain’s Office, 2 Group Rooms, Library, HSCL Suite, Special Education Unit, Meeting Rooms, PE Hall and ancillary facilities, Staff Room, 15 Management and Administration Offices, Print Room, First Aid/Sick Bay, General Purpose/Dining Area, Data Communication Centre etc. The Campus will also include extensive Hard Court and Playing Pitch areas.

The new initiative is a partnership model involving the three current schools in the management structure and enshrining all that is best from the existing educational traditions. The Board of Management will include representation from the Sisters/Diocese, St. Ita’s, the VEC, Parents and Staff.

The three schools have in recent years been working in close cooperation in the pursuit of their collective vision for this new development. In this regard a very effective Steering Committee, comprising representation from each of the three schools of Trustee, Board of Management, Principal, Staff and Parent interests has been successfully coordinating the process. In this context the planning and implementation timeframe and the building programme for the next fifteen months have been carefully co-ordinated to ensure a smooth and seamless transition to the new school.

This exciting project represents a major multi-million euro investment in educational development in the area and, when completed, will provide the most advanced educational infrastructure and opportunities for students and staff and will ensure that education continues to play a centrally important role in enhancing the quality of life of the people of the catchment community.
